Liverpool will “enter into renewal talks” with a “really special” player in the next few weeks, according to a key update from journalist Pipe Sierra.

It has been a glorious season at Anfield, with Premier League title glory secured last weekend, while Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah have signed new deals.

There are still doubts over the futures of several players, however, including Caoimhin Kelleher, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez.

According to Sierra on X, Liverpool are set for talks with Diaz over his future soon, as they look to decide whether to offer him an extension or allow him to leave:

“Liverpool will enter into renewal talks with Luis Díaz (28) in the coming weeks. This conversation will determine whether he continues or if he can be sold in the summer. The Colombian is #17 on the club’s list of highest paid players and his contract ends in June 2027.”

Should Liverpool keep or sell Diaz?

Opinion is likely to be divided among Liverpool fans when it comes to Diaz’s future, but there are surely more who would rather he stayed put this summer.

The Colombian has been a more important attacker than Nunez, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa this season, scoring 16 goals, and he has shone both on the left wing and in a central role.

Granted, Diaz isn’t necessarily a world-class attacker like Mohamed Salah, or Sadio Mane on the left flank before him, but he possesses great skill and a strong work ethic, while Jurgen Klopp lauded him during his time as Liverpool manager, saying:

“What a boy, what a story, what a player but he should have scored! He agrees probably. The speed he has is insane. He gets our football 100 per cent. We thought we saw that at Porto. He fits like a glove to our football and that’s really really special.”

Now 28, Diaz only has two years left on his current deal, so it is a big decision for Liverpool to make over a new contract, but the positives outweigh the negatives with him, and an extension is deserved, if he wants to stay and not join a club like Barcelona.

That’s not to say at least one new attacker isn’t needed this summer, though, putting more pressure on the Colombia international to find another gear.
