Liverpool have taken the second step towards signing Alexander Isak and ironically enough, it involves making an approach to Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike.
Yesterday, Liverpool informed Newcastle of their desire to sign Isak, saying they are ready to make a Premier League record bid to get the deal over the line.
They also told the Magpies that if they don’t want to sell Isak, the Reds will simply move onto their second choice, Ekitike. This is bad news for Eddie Howe as the French striker is Newcastle United’s primary transfer target this summer.
Now, Liverpool have made an approach for Ekitike, piling more pressure on them.
Liverpool approach Frankfurt for Ekitike even though Isak is their priority
Reporting via Twitter, journalist Ben Jacobs shares the details of the power struggle emerging between Liverpool and Newcastle.
Jacobs reports: “Liverpool have made an approach for Hugo Ekitike, who is a leading target if Alexsander Isak is not possible, as reported last week.
“LFC have approached both Newcastle and Frankfurt to understand both situations. Isak the priority, but Liverpool will quickly proceed with Ekitike if they determine Isak isn’t possible this summer.
“NUFC have had an £70m bid for Ekitike rejected, and are still trying to agree a fee. Liverpool ready to advance on Ekitike quickly once they determine Isak clarity. Richard Hughes to make the final call soon with input from Michael Edwards.”

Liverpool signing Isak would be mental
It has been clear all summer that Liverpool are seriously interested in Isak which shouldn’t be that surprising. He’s the best striker in England and so the best team in England understandably wants him.
What has felt difficult to believe until now is that Liverpool are willing to spend so much on him even after paying £100m up front for Florian Wirtz.
Arne Slot is very close to assembling a side that, on paper at least, could be called the best in the world.
PSG remain the ones to beat after the beautiful showcased in the Champions League last season but Liverpool are getting close to having a near perfect starting XI.
