Liverpool have made contact over the signing of Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, according to an encouraging new transfer update.
The Reds again flattered to deceive defensively on Sunday, losing 3-2 away to Manchester United, with Ibrahima Konate bemoaning another bad day at the office.
“For sure, it’s a big disappointment because I think we concede two goals that we must not concede when we start the game,” Konate told Liverpoolfc.com.
“[In] the second half we came back with a great mentality to [go] 2-2.
“And in other moments we can hurt them but we concede a goal and that’s why it’s very sad for us, because we didn’t start the game very well but the second half we started very well. I think it was a big opportunity to take three points and we didn’t get anything.”
Now, Voetbal International [via Sport Witness] report that Liverpool are keen on signing Van Hecke this summer, having made contact over a move to Anfield. His current Brighton deal expires in 2027.
Arne Slot is described as a “big fan” and liked the idea of bringing him to Feyenoord when he was in charge there, and the Reds want him even if Konate signs a contract extension.
Can Jan Paul van Hecke excel for Liverpool?
Van Hecke is such an impressive centre-back, becoming one of the first names on Brighton’s team sheet and being hailed by Roberto De Zerbi when they worked together at the Amex Stadium:
At 25, Van Hecke is at a perfect age to make the next step in his career, shining for one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and he has the technical experience and defensive class to be an instant hit for Liverpool.
This season, the Netherlands international has averaged 5.3 clearances and 3.2 aerial duel wins per game in the Premier League, while three goals and assists apiece highlight his threat at the other end of the pitch.
