Liverpool are close to reaching an agreement with Bayern Munich for the sale of Luis Diaz which Arne Slot must use to sign Rodrygo as his replacement.

This summer has been a statement of intent from Liverpool after winning the Premier League last season. It was the Reds’ 20th league title and one that marked the end of Manchester United’s era as the club with the most league titles.

Liverpool are obviously keen to win their 21st league title next season to return to the perch that Sir Alex Ferguson so famously removed them from.

Slot has already signed Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and is set to unveil Hugo Ekitike as his side’s new No.9 but the transfer business doesn’t seem set to end there.

With Diaz expected to secure a big money move to Germany with Bayern, a replacement will be needed and Real Madrid’s Rodrygo has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield.

The season ahead is a crucial one for top players as the end of the season will be immediately followed by the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the USA.

Rodrygo needs regular game time to guarantee himself a spot in Brazil’s squad and Liverpool would be one of the best clubs in Europe to best showcase his worthiness of a World Cup spot.

Rodrygo is the best possible replacement for Luis Diaz based on the current market

The best left winger in the world at the moment is probably Kvicha Kvaratshkelia but given that PSG only signed him in January for a fee in the region of £59m, he is not avaialable and if he is, the fee required would be astronomical.

Rodrygo is reportedly available for around £86m (€100m) and has three years left on his contract. If Diaz were to leave, the Brazil international would be the best possible replacement this summer.

Former Liverpool star, Jermaine Pennant, agrees.

He says: “Liverpool are in the business of signing world-class players, and should Luis Diaz depart, Real Madrid’s Rodrygo looks a fantastic option to replace him.

“He’s not some young, unstudied talent, he’s an experienced and established player as it is and watching him over the years has been exciting.

“He’s quick, powerful, direct and very tricky to defend against and you could even say he fits a similar profile to Diaz.

“It’d be a like-for-like replacement and a transfer that I could see the fans really getting behind should Diaz leave.”
