Liverpool need to make sure they don’t sell Harvey Elliott on the cheap

Liverpool are potentially set to sell Harvey Elliott this summer to make way for new signings and his form during the U21 Euros says a lot about the talent Arne Slot is losing.

If Liverpool hadn’t already signed Florian Wirtz, there would be a lot more uproar than there already is at the thought of selling Elliott.

For starters, it was already disappointing to see as little as we did of the playmaker last season but given Arne Slot won the Premier League without needing to call on Elliott, it probably should have been obvious that the Dutch manager would sell him this summer.

That said, selling Elliott is still a risk in my eyes. The only way Liverpool can get any value out of selling the 22-year-old is if they sell for him for over £50m and include a buyback clause as they did for Jarell Quansah.

Alan Pardew says what everyone is thinking about Harvey Elliott

With five goals in six games, Elliott was instrumental in England winning the U21 European Championship this summer.

Yet, it doesn’t seem like it will have any bearing on his chances of staying at Liverpool beyond this summer with Wirtz set to be the club’s No.10 which leaves little room for Elliott.

While speaking live on air for talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says it’s difficult to see where Elliott where will fit in to find game at Anfield next season.

When you come down to Elliott, I just don’t know where he would get into that team,” he said.

“And, when you look at Liverpool at the moment with their new signings, wow, you know, it’s really going to be difficult for him to kind of back this up now, this trophy win because obviously he’s been at the centre of everything, hasn’t he?”

Elliott likely increased his value with his performances at the U21 Euros

As I mentioned above, Liverpool need to be selling Elliott for at least £60m. If it were the Reds in the market for someone like Xavi Simons, they’d be quoted between £50m and £70m, so Liverpool need to be aggressive in demanding fair market value for Elliott.

Sure, he only played 822 minutes last season but the season before, he played just shy of 2,800 minutes which resulted in four goals and 14 assists.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out but Elliott is a top talent and should be treated as such.
