It’s a huge risk and puts Andoni Iraola’s first season at the helm at major risk, given how intensive his football philosophy is on midfielders in particular.
Liverpool not likely to sign a midfielder this summer
Lewis Steele reports that while Liverpool do not currently plan to sign a new midfielder, they are interested in Adam Wharton, but his £100m price tag is prohibitive to a move to Anfield this summer.
“Will they sign a midfielder to replace Jones? As it stands, no – though that could change if a deal becomes available in the last week of the market,” Steele said in a Q&A for the Daily Mail.
“Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has long been linked with a move but the Selhurst Park club would want a huge fee of around £100m – and there is no indication Liverpool are interested anyway.
“Many other midfielders have been mooted but it seems more likely than not that the Reds do not sign a midfielder this window.”

I totally understand Liverpool not being willing to spend £100m on Wharton, but that won’t stop me dreaming of seeing him at Anfield in the future.
The English midfielder recently shared a video of himself with Steven Gerrard’s shirt from the 2005 Istanbul final, which sent fans online into overdrive speculating about a move to sign him.

That doesn’t seem likely to happen this summer, but it could down the line.
With Andoni Iraola now in charge at Liverpool, it’s difficult to imagine a midfielder who currently plays in the Premier League that would be better suited to his style of football. Not only is he very intelligent, but his in-game IQ is also such that he is perfect for blocking passing lanes.
More importantly, his incredible passing would allow him to launch Liverpool onto the counter-attack instantly from almost anywhere on the pitch.
With Trent Alexander-Arnold no longer at the club, it’s the biggest profile that is yet to be replaced in the transfer market.
