Liverpool are now reportedly “confident” about Ibrahima Konate signing a contract extension at the club, having sent an offer his way.
The future of the Frenchman has been a major talking point of late, with some supporters not even against the idea of him leaving for Real Madrid, given his form this season.
Konate has been well below the level expected of him far too often, with errors thrown in both on and off the ball, and he needs to be far better as the campaign goes on.
Now, L’Equipe [via This Is Anfield] report that Liverpool have made an offer to the 26-year-old’s representatives in recent days, wit the club “confident” that a renewal will happen.
Konate is out of contract at the end of this season, and the Reds need to avoid a repeat of the saga lingering on like it did with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah last term.
Mixed feelings about a new Konate deal at Liverpool
There is so much to admire about Konate when he is on top form, with Liverpool’s No.5 forging a great understanding with Van Dijk and being lauded by his captain last season:
“He is a fantastic player who still can be better. As you saw, he is important with the goal, he is defensively solid, a bit unlucky with the goal we conceded, but obviously the qualities he has are outstanding in my opinion. He is learning, growing, getting better and looking after himself much better in order to be ready every three days as that’s what asked.”
That said, Konate has been so sloppy this season and is threatening not to kick on his career, failing to become the mature and consistent player that he should be at his age.
If things don’t improve, Liverpool may be wise to move him on and bring in an upgrade, but he does have the potential to be a great option if his slump comes to an end.
A new deal would have its positives, with Konate knowing the club inside out and still having plenty of years ahead of him, but he must justify it now.
