Liverpool are reportedly “continuing to keep a close eye” on an “excellent” centre-back this summer, having sent scouts to watch him in action.
The future of Luis Diaz is still a major area of focus for the Reds, as they look to sign an ideal replacement for him, should he seal a move to Bayern Munich.
It is important that Liverpool don’t neglect bringing in a new central defender as well, though, with Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen giving them less depth.
According to Give Me Sport‘s Sam Cohen on X, Toulouse defender Charlie Cresswell is being looked at by Liverpool this summer, having scouted him already:
“BREAKING: Liverpool are continuing to keep a close eye on Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell, with the 22-year-old firmly on the radar of the club’s recruitment team after being scouted on multiple occasions last season.”
Strong squad player with a bright future
Cresswell is an impressive young player who is going from strength to strength in his career, winning the Under-21 European Championships with England earlier this summer.
The 22-year-old made three starts at the tournament, sealing glory for the second time after the Three Lions’ triumph back in 2023, so he looks like a strong option for Liverpool.
Cresswell has some experience in England from earlier in his career, making five Premier League appearances during his Leeds United days, with Gary Rowett hailing him as “excellent” at Millwall.
Meanwhile, SCOUTED heaped praise on him on X after the Euros final in June, saying: “Yes, Nick Woltemade scored the most goals and provided the most assists. Yes, Harvey Elliott scored in all three knockout games. Both are remarkable feats. But without Cresswell, Woltemade may have made his mark in the final. Without Cresswell, Elliott’s goals may have been in vain. Huge headers. Huge blocks. Huge tackles. All at vital moments.”
While Marc Guehi would still be the superior centre-back signing for Liverpool, given his experience, Cresswell could also be an ideal man to bring in and fill the void left by Quansah, being happy with a squad role but potentially growing into a regular starter over time.
He averaged 6.1 clearances and 3.2 aerial duel wins in Ligue 1 for Toulouse last season, highlighting his dominance, and the fact that he is a homegrown player is a bonus for the Reds.
