Liverpool have a “serious interest” in Chelsea centre-back Levi Colwill ahead of the summer transfer window, seeing him as a Virgil van Dijk successor.
Unlike Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson, and potentially Alisson for that matter, Van Dijk will be staying at Anfield for at least one more season.
That doesn’t mean a long-term replacement doesn’t need to be brought in, however, in what is eventually going to be a gaping void to fill.
According to a respected source on X, Colwill is a summer target for Liverpool, having been linked with the Reds before his move to Chelsea:
“Liverpool is making headlines again, this time with serious interest in Chelsea’s Levi Colwill. We understand the young centre-back is open to a move to Anfield. This is the second time Liverpool has tried to sign the player. Levi Colwill has shown immense potential and could be the perfect long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk.
“With Van Dijk not getting any younger, Liverpool needs to plan ahead, and Colwill fits the bill. His ability to read the game and contribute both defensively and offensively makes him a valuable asset. If this transfer goes through, it could reshape Liverpool’s defence for years to come. Keep an eye on this one.”
Can Levi Colwill be Virgil van Dijk’s successor at Liverpool?
Replacing Van Dijk is going to be almost impossible, considering the Dutchman is among the greatest centre-backs in the history of the game.
But Colwill represents a talented young option, with Chelsea interim head coach Calum McFarlane recently lauding his form after a lengthy injury absence:
“When someone’s had an injury for that long, you have to be patient. We just need to manage his minutes, not push him too much. We don’t want to risk re?injuring him, but he looks brilliant and he is in a really good place. We are really hopeful we will see him before the end of the season.”
Colwill is still only 23, and has both the technical ability on the ball and defensive nous off it to be an excellent signing for Liverpool ahead of next season.
The likelihood is that he will never reach Van Dijk’s heights – who would? – but he has the ceiling to mature into a world-class defender in his own right.
