Liverpool are reportedly ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea in the race to sign Eduardo Camavinga from Real Madrid this summer.

The Reds may have excelled against Galatasaray in midweek, but that doesn’t hide the fact that they have struggled in many positions this season.

In midfield, Ryan Gravnenberch has struggled to replicate the consistent brilliance of last year, while Alexis Mac Allister has looked leggy.

For that reason, a new central midfielder may be high up on Liverpool’s wishlist this summer, with Camavinga one player who has been linked with a move to Anfield recently.

There has now been a development regarding the situation, with TEAMtalk reporting that the Reds are in pole position to sign the Frenchman this summer, sitting ahead of Premier League rivals United and Chelsea.

The report says that Liverpool are “long-term admirers of Camavinga, having held discussions to sign him in 2021 after his breakthrough at Rennes”, and he could be available for as little as £43m.

Eduardo Camavinga can breathe new life into Liverpool’s midfield

Camavinga is such an impressive young footballer, with Carlo Ancelotti lauding his fitness levels during his time in charge at Madrid:

“He is taking advantage of the time he has played as a full-back to improve his boundaries. He is very young and he has to mature his experience and his tactical knowledge. Technically, he has nothing to learn and, physically, he has the engine of a Ferrari, not like a (Fiat) 500.”

At 23, Camavinga is already a two-time Champions League winner, and he has the quality on the ball, tactical intelligence and work rate to excel for Liverpool.

It seems strange that he can’t nail down a regular starting berth for Madrid, even though they clearly have a huge amount of midfield ability and depth, but the Reds should be looking to pounce on the situation.

Camavinga can also play at left-back, if required, while his peak years may still be a while away, and given the potential price tag, there are almost no negatives to Liverpool making a move for him.

The fact that the Merseysiders are reportedly leading the race can only be a good thing, and it will be interesting to see if there are further developments.
