Liverpool are battling one of their biggest rivals for the signing of a “world-class” player alongside Alexander Isak, according to a new transfer claim.
The saga surrounding Isak is ongoing, with the Swede releasing a significant statement on Tuesday evening, once again stressing that he wants to leave Newcastle United:
“I’m proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25. First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who have supported me along the way. I’m not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.
“I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading.
“When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interest of everyone, not just myself.”
Now, according to journalist Jorge Nicola [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are eyeing another big player with Isak, with the Reds and Manchester City tussling to sign Real Madrid superstar Rodrygo.
The £76m-rated Brazilian could leave Madrid this summer, with his future up in the air for months now, and the Premier League champions reportedly consider him a strong replacement for Luis Diaz.
Will Rodrygo end up at Liverpool?
If Liverpool do end up signing Isak, it is hard to see them being able to afford Rodrygo as well, so it may have to be one or the other, even though they play in different attacking positions.
If the Madrid ace does join the Reds, though, it is easy to see him being a huge success, considering he has 119 goal contributions in 270 appearances for his current club.
Meanwhile, former Madrid teammate Luka Modric has described him as a “world-class” player, which is high praise from a legend of the game, so it will be interesting to see what develops in the coming weeks.
