Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing an “incredible” player in the summer transfer window, according to an exciting new report.
This summer could be a memorable one at Anfield, with Arne Slot given lots of funds to bring in new signings and make his Premier League-winning squad even more formidable.
While full-back areas are key positions to target, as is a new striker, there is also a chance that Liverpool could look to bring in another midfielder, in order to make competition for places even stronger there.
According to a report from Spain, the Reds are keen on signing Barcelona ace Frenkie de Jong at the end of the season, with rivals Arsenal and Manchester City also eyeing him up.
The report states that Barca could be forced into listening to offers for the £312,000-a-week-earning Dutchman, should he fail to agree a new contract. His current deal there expires in the summer of 2026, so this is crunch time regarding his future.
An elite option to add to Liverpool’s midfield
De Jong is enjoying a superb season for Barca, helping them reach the semi-finals of the Champions League, shining alongside Pedri at the heart of the midfield.
The 27-year-old has a 95% and 94% pass completion rate in La Liga and the Champions League respectively in 2024/25 to date, outlining his brilliance in possession, and Andre Villas-Boas has lauded him, saying:
“He’s incredible. I like players who are above average when it comes to technical and tactical ability. The players who help form others around them.”
In truth, it is hard to see Liverpool stumping up a huge fee and big wages for De Jong, given the fact that he turns 28 later this year and wouldn’t necessarily represent a long-term option.
Instead, the Reds should be looking at signing a younger player who can compete with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, moulding him into an elite player over time.
That said, if De Jong was suddenly open to a move to Liverpool and the club felt they were able to afford him, he could be a magnificent signing for several years, in terms of the control and quality he would add to the midfield.
