For nearly a decade, Liverpool’s defensive lineup has largely remained intact, with Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Andy Robertson forming the cornerstone of a back line that has been reliable through thick and thin.

However, that might all change this summer.

With Alexander-Arnold seemingly on his way to Real Madrid and ongoing doubts surrounding Salah and van Dijk’s future, it’s clear that Liverpool could soon find themselves in need of a defensive rebuild.

And if that wasn’t enough, Robertson’s position is also under scrutiny, with reports indicating Liverpool are eyeing up Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth as a potential left-back addition.

Meanwhile, the futures of Jarell Quansah, Joe Gomez, and Ibrahima Konate are all uncertain. Konate, in particular, will have just one year left on his contract come June, heightening the pressure to make some key decisions.

In short, this summer looks set to be a pivotal one for Liverpool’s defence, with Arne Slot and Richard Hughes tasked with reshaping the back line. The Reds might already have a potential solution in mind, with reports from Italy suggesting they are keen to revisit a former transfer target.

Liverpool keen on Oumar Solet

Since the signing of Konate in 2021, Liverpool have refrained from strengthening their centre-back options, despite several opportunities to do so.

One of those came in January 2024 when, under former sporting director Jorg Schmadtke, Liverpool considered signing Oumar Solet from RB Salzburg. Despite talks, the move never materialized.

Following the failed transfer, Solet shockingly terminated his contract at Salzburg in September 2024 before joining Udinese in January 2025. Since his arrival, the 25-year-old Frenchman has been making waves in Serie A, earning praise for his performances.

According to Sport Italia, Liverpool are once again interested in the defender, alongside Premier League rivals Manchester City and Chelsea.

Solet has impressed enough to become a player on the radar of top clubs, and his price-tag, initially set at nothing after his free transfer, is already estimated at £25 million – a figure that could rise even further if he continues to perform at a high level.
