Liverpool are reportedly preparing to table a £37.5m offer for Galatasaray centre-back Wilfried Singo in the January transfer window.
The Reds’ defence has been a problem all season long, with Ibrahima Konate standing out as arguably the worst player in the team.
On Saturday, it was Konate’s needless conceded penalty that allowed Leeds United to get back in the game, with Liverpool eventually drawing 3-3 at Elland Road.
A new centre-back could be needed in January, given the Frenchman’s woes and Giovanni Leoni’s season-ending injury, and now a new transfer claim has emerged.
According to Foot-Sut7 and Fotomac [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are ready to bid £37.5m in total for Galatasaray defender Singo next month.
That includes potential bonuses, with negotiations over the transfer already taking place and confidence that a deal can be struck for the Ivory Coast international.
Singo a strong squad player to bring in for Liverpool
As mentioned, Konate’s form this season has heightened the need for centre-back reinforcements at Liverpool, with former Reds winger Jermaine Pennant lambasting him during the Leeds game, saying:
“I’m done with konate now seriously 4th game in a row he makes a mistake leading to a goal….. he’s strong and quick but thats it, technically he’s awful, doesn’t win Ariel duels even tho he’s 6”4, passing ability of Sunday league….. Marc guehi please come January 1st.”
In Singo, Liverpool would be bringing in a player who can provide strong competition for places for Konate, having become a key man for Galatasaray. The 24-year-old has been lauded by analyst Ben Mattinson, who has said of him:
“Aerially dominant, freak athlete, so quick and an amazing overlap option, played as a flying RWB before and now is also a seriously composed and impressive RCB in a back 4. Singo would be both RB & RCB competition.”
Admittedly, Singo only joined Galatasaray in the summer window, making just 10 appearances for the Turkish giants to date, but the lure of Liverpool could be too great to turn down for him.
It remains to be seen if his current club are desperate for him to stay or not, but the Reds should be viewing him as a good January option, before then looking to sign Crystal Palace and England ace Marc Guehi next summer.
