Liverpool are reportedly targeting Real Madrid academy graduate and current Girona star Miguel Gutierrez as a potential long-term replacement for Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window.

Robertson is still a high-performing player but too often this season, mistakes and lapses of concentration have crept into his game, leading many to wonder if it’s time to consider a long-term successor to the Scotsman.

He is by no means finished at the top level but he is struggling to replicate the incredible consistency that defined his game for so long. As his performance against Bournemouth proved, Robertson is still capable of delivering robust performances when needed.

Milos Kerkez has been a target for a while and while he didn’t shine too brightly against Liverpool given he was against Mohamed Salah, he would be a very good player to sign to succeed Robbo.

Now, Girona star and Real Madrid academy graduate Miguel Gutierrez is emerging as a potential signing for the summer transfer window.

Liverpool now targeting Miguel Gutierrez as potential Robertson heir

According to Liverpool reporter David Lynch, one name that has emerged as a potential heir to Robertson is Miguel Gutierrez, who is shining in La Liga with Girona.

The 23-year-0ld was decent against Liverpool in the Champions League this season and would be quite comfortable in the Reds’ attacking system.

The only barrier to signing him is that Girona are owned by the City Football Group, who may be resistant to the thought of letting him move to Anfield in the summer.

Assuming there are no outgoings and Liverpool extend contracts for Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, left-back is the only position that really needs investment.

It will be very interesting to see how Arne Slot approaches the summer transfer window after he was very quiet before the start of this season.

It’s clear that he is not one to rush into splashing the cash and has given himself the chance to spend a year with his squad before deciding where millions of pounds of investment is needed.

That sort of shrewdness is no doubt part of why FSG were so convinced he was the man to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

If his transfer success rate looks anything like his win rate as Liverpool boss, it should be a simple and successful summer.
