Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Atalanta midfielder Ederson at the end of the season, battling rivals Manchester United for his signature.
The Reds have excelled in midfield this season, with Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai making up their strongest unit in the middle of the park.
Curtis Jones has also been a key player, however, with the likes of Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott have been handy when allowed to shine.
While Arne Slot may be happy with the options he has at his disposal, some may feel that one more top-level midfield could be ideal.
According to Tutto Atalanta [via Sport Witness], Liverpool are “ready to knock on the door” of Atalanta to sign Ederson in the summer transfer window.
United are also thought to be keen on acquiring the 25-year-old’s signature, as they look to bring in a long-term replacement for the past-his-best Casemiro.
Do Liverpool need Ederson this summer?
Ederson could be a brilliant signing for Liverpool this summer, and while midfield is far from the most pressing area of the pitch for them to improve in, bringing in such a formidable player makes complete sense.
The Brazilian is arguably one of the first names of his side’s team sheet, combining expert defensive work with technical ability, with journalist Tim Vickery lauding his quality in the past, saying:
“24-years-old, strong, well-built central midfielder. Strong on the ball, versatile, box-to-box. Strong personality as well. The first time I remember him was his professional debut really. He was thrown in the deep end in a big team called Cruzeiro, who were really on the slide. They were relegated in dreadful form and even in this bad context, he stood out, so a lot of virtues.”
Ederson’s peak is still likely to be a few years away, meaning Liverpool could be getting the best of him, and while Gravenberch and Mac Allister have been superb as a double pivot, they aren’t necessarily perfect when it comes to their defensive work,
If the Reds could pip United to his services at the same time as bringing him in this summer, it would feel particularly sweet for the Premier League leaders.
