Liverpool are spending heavily this summer but for all the talk of exciting new forwards, the club is still looking for a centre-back especially amid the Ibrahima Konate saga.

When last season ended, the consensus among fans was that Liverpool needed a new centre-back to provide further depth.

Liverpool have since sold Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and now there is also the risk that Konate could leave. The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of next season and doesn’t seem to be close to renewing his terms at Anfield.

Losing Konate would be a massive blow and would mean that Liverpool need to sign two centre-backs as well.

Crystal Palace central defender Marc Guehi has been on the radar this summer and would cost in the region of £45m. Palace reportedly would like to sign Sporting Lisbon star Ousmane Diomande as his replacement but until a deal to sign Guehi materialises, there will continue to be links to other defenders.

Liverpool offered Lucas Beraldo amid centre-back search

According to TBR Football, Liverpool and PSG both want to sign Bournemouth defender Illya Zabarnyi with the Cherries enquiring about Lucas Beraldo.

Beraldo joined PSG in January 2024 but now wants to leave over lack of game time in the French capital.

Reportedly, “Beraldo’s people are doing work on potential options” with PSG said to be “open” to selling this summer.

His agents have approached English clubs with Liverpool and Chelsea being offered the chance to sign the defender this summer although there has been little coverage of Liverpool interest in Beraldo since he moved to France.

Liverpool at risk of “doing too much”

Liverpool need to be careful that they tow the line between investing heavily and completely overhauling a team that just won the Premier League.

Losing Konate and having to replace him is a big worry but it may be that Liverpool would prefer to get another season out of him instead of replacing him this summer.

Liverpool are preoccupied with their negotiations to sign Ekitike for the time being but once they turn their attenton back to signing a centre-back, more concrete information should emerge.
