Liverpool are believed to be keeping tabs on an “unbelievable” Premier League striker, according to a fresh update from journalist Joe Rindl.

Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak have dominated the Reds-related transfer news in recent days, with the former now looking the strong favourite to come in this summer.

While Isak has been viewed as the perfect option for Liverpool, Newcastle simply aren’t willing to sell him, so it now looks like Ekitike will join the Reds instead of moving to the Magpies.

It would now be a shock if the Eintracht Frankfurt star didn’t become a Liverpool player this summer, but that doesn’t mean a different striker hasn’t also been linked with a move to Anfield.

According to BBC Sport‘s Rindl, the Reds have “checked in” on Aston Villa and England Ollie Watkins, as well as Brentford’s Yoane Wissa.

No official approach appears to have been made yet, though.

Could Watkins AND Ekitike join Liverpool?

With Darwin Nunez still expected to leave Liverpool this summer, and the tragic passing of Diogo Jota also leaving a huge void in the squad, Watkins could potentially be considered an option on top of Ekitike.

The 29-year-old has matured into a fantastic attacking player for both club and country, being lauded by Ian Wright after his dramatic semi-final winner for England against the Netherlands at Euro 2024 last year:

“Nobody did that to those defenders all night. They had an easy ride until he came on. Someone that is finally in the position to stretch a team, get half a chance, get a half a yard, take the shot. I don’t know what to say, it’s just an unbelievable moment.”
Ekitike should be considered the superior long-term option for Liverpool, considering he is seven years younger than Watkins, but the Villa man could be a shrewd squad option if Nunez leaves.
He has scored 75 goals in 184 appearances in the Premier League, as well as chipping in with 36 assists, and he may be happy to play more of a squad role for one of the best teams in Europe, still featuring plenty across four different competitions.
