Liverpool are expected to prioritise the signing of a new winger this summer, with trusted journalists indicating that strengthening the flanks is firmly on the club’s agenda.

The Reds are widely expected to enter the market for attacking reinforcements after enduring a difficult season in wide areas.

The Reds opted not to directly replace Luis Díaz following his sale to Bayern Munich, leaving increased responsibility on the shoulders of Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.

Inconsistency and a lack of pace in wide areas have been recurring themes throughout the campaign, prompting expectations that attacking reinforcements will be among the club’s top priorities ahead of next season.

Michael Olise links addressed amid Bayern stance

Among the players linked most frequently with Liverpool is Michael Olise.

However, Fabrizio Romano has suggested that while Liverpool are indeed targeting wide attackers, Bayern Munich are currently determined to keep hold of the Frenchman.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano indicated that Liverpool are actively planning to recruit an important winger, but Bayern have shown little appetite to consider offers for Olise.

“I see Liverpool going for important wingers, yes I do,” Romano said. “But when it’s about Olise, my understanding is that Bayern are playing down all the reports because they see him staying. They don’t want him to go.”

That position does not entirely rule out future movement, but it suggests any deal would be difficult to complete in the near term.

Further insight has come from David Ornstein, who expects Liverpool to pursue a wide attacker with a similar profile to Antoine Semenyo.

Liverpool were previously linked with Semenyo before he completed a move to Manchester City during the January transfer window. According to Ornstein, the club’s earlier interest in that profile of winger uggests they will continue searching for a winger capable of providing directness, pace and goal threat from wide positions.

While speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast, Ornstein said*: “I expect a wide attacker to be signed, like a winger. They were in for Semenyo previously, he didn’t come to them but I think that’s what they’re in the market for.”*

While Olise remains a difficult deal to pull off at present, several other names have been circulated as possible alternatives.

Players such as Bradley Barcola, Anthony Gordon and Yan Diomande have all been mentioned as options Liverpool are monitoring.

At this stage, no single target appears to have emerged as the clear frontrunner.
