Liverpool are reportedly for a ‘midfield shake-up’ as the club looks to bounce back from the disappointment of the 2025-26 season.

Managerial and tactical issues aside, it’s fair to say that more could have been expected of some of this season’s underperformers.

Alexis Mac Allister has looked particularly poor at times, regressing majorly from the midfield metronome that kept the pace of the game where it should be during the Premier League title triumph of 2025.

Liverpool reporter David Lynch reports that the club is planning major changes in the middle of the park. He characterised the engine room as ‘soft’ and it’s difficult to disagree.

According to Lynch, reporting from his Substack, only Florian Wirtz, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are guaranteed a place in the Liverpool midfield next season.

Lynch reports: “Having signed a new six-year contract in March, Ryan Gravenberch is set to remain a key figure in any new-look midfield.

“More must also be expected of Florian Wirtz, who has only occasionally sparkled during a debut campaign that has only been made tougher by the countless issues around him.

“Fortunately, there are no such concerns over the season’s star man Dominik Szoboszlai, beyond the fact that the Reds have yet to make a breakthrough in attempts to tie him down to a new deal.

“However, any certainty over next year’s options starts and ends with that trio, with major changes possible elsewhere.”

Which midfielders are Liverpool targetting this summer?

Lynch goes on to report via YouTube that Adam Wharton, Lamine Camara and Mamadou Sangare are under consideration.

He says: “Adam Wharton is strongly admired by recruitment staff, who have been in close contact with his representatives since his breakthrough at Blackburn.

“Lamine Camara of Monaco and RC Lens Mamadou Sangare are also among the emerging targets to have been watched closely. Any additions depends much on exactly who departs.”

Liverpool are said to be in ‘advanced talks’ with Wharton and his agents.

Although Liverpool are in need of new signings to reinvigorate the team, the £460m spent last summer and subsequent capitulation this season suggest that the issues are top-down not the other way around.

Question marks surrounding Arne Slot’s suitability to Liverpool remain and any signings this summer will be made with a certain element of risk after the massive regression across the board at Anfield this season.
