His partner, Noa van der Bij, shared the tragic news over the weekend. The couple, who share a young son named Samuel, were expecting their second child together in October.

She later shared a poignant moment from a visit to a local church playground with Samuel, seeing it as a comfort during a dark time:
“We went to church to light a candle. Afterward, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel. There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Gakpo also released a brief, dignified statement, asking for space as his family navigates their grief:
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding.”

The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed that the 27-year-old forward reached the decision to stay with Ronald Koeman’s squad after close consultation with his family. The federation expressed their deepest sympathies and pledged to support the Liverpool attacker through every step of the tournament.
“First of all, we sympathise with Cody and his family, Noa and their son Samuel. This is a very sad private situation,” the KNVB statement read.
“Naturally, we were already aware of this, and the KNVB is trying to support the family where possible. Cody has decided, in consultation with his girlfriend, to remain with the group. We respect their privacy and therefore will not comment further on the situation, including the way in which we are trying to be there for them.”
The 27-year-old attacker has informed manager Ronald Koeman that he is physically and mentally ready to feature in Tuesday morning’s high-stakes encounter vs Morocco (2am UK time). “I think Cody handled that very well. There has never been a moment when he said, ‘I want to go back [home]’ or ‘I want to be with the family.’ He has assessed that himself and done it in his own way. I think that shows maturity, how he and the family have dealt with this.
“So he’s ready to play and it doesn’t weigh on his performance. He does this in his own way with the family, and that is very strong and beautiful. We have left it that way. We have been there as support, where we could be, just like the players.”
