Liverpool are reportedly considering making a “concrete move” for Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella this summer, as their midfield search intensifies.
It is no secret that the Reds see the middle of the park as the most important area of the pitch to improve currently, following a tough 2022/23 season.
In terms of regular starters, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson struggled to replicate their past form, while there were constant injury problems surrounding the likes of Thiago, Naby Keita, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Alexis Mac Allister was an early transfer window arrival from Brighton, acting as a strong start to the summer for Liverpool, but their business cannot afford to stop there.
The 26-year-old enjoyed an excellent season for Inter, helping them reach the Champions League final against Manchester City, also scoring and assisting six times apiece in Serie A.
According to journalist Rudy Galetti on Twitter, Barella is still seen as a summer target by Liverpool, with an offer potentially incoming:
“Barella remains a target for #Liverpool to strengthen the midfield. LFC are internally evaluating if made a concrete move (bid!) for Nicolo in the next days. Inter – to date – consider the player non-transferable.”

Barella would be an incredibly exciting signing by the Reds if they could get a deal over the line, with the Inter star a Euro 2020 winner with Italy, who he has won 44 caps for to date.
He is the all-round package that Jurgen Klopp presumably wants in the middle of the park, showcasing a combination of technical class, hard work and end product in the final third. He completed 85% of his passes in Serie A in 2022/23, but he also averaged 1.4 tackles per game.
Barella’s “creative” side has been lauded by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard, who also said he did “really well” up against Jude Bellingham when they faced each other.
At the age of 26, he is in the absolute prime of his career, and that shouldn’t change for the next four or five years, so to have him, Mac Allister was one other new signing – Thuram or Szoboszlai would arguably be the standout option – would be ideal for Klopp’s men.
