Liverpool show the true nature of the meaning of a supporters club as they are set to raise funds for Sean Cox, a Liverpool supporter and die-hard Red, who suffered life altering injuries in an attack from Roma fans just before the Champions League match last April. Sean, who has been moved to specialist centre in in Ireland to carry on his rehabilitation, has had a go-fund me page set up by his wife and promoted via Liverpool Football Club to help pay for top level care.
In Rome, Cox was getting treatment from the city’s well-equipped Beaumont Hospital, the place he has stayed since leaving Liverpool in May. He is now in a highly specialised 12-week program in Ireland’s National Rehabilitation Centre.
When that is completed he will return to his home and family in Liverpool, who along with the club have began fundraising to get the help and long-term care finance that Sean will need.
The GoFundMe page aims to raise €2 million and, at the time of writing, is on a healthy £23K with obviously a way to go, but they seem to be flooding in so we are sure that the target will be met – you can donate by clicking here.
Here is what his wife Martina told national news about Sean’s injuries, which have stopped his ability to communicate and harmed his sight.
“Sean is going to need extensive rehab for a very long time to get him to where he needs to be, or to be the best that he can be now,” Martina said.
“They say you never get back the same person but obviously we’re going to try and push him.
“We want Sean back as best we can so we will do whatever we have to do to get him to the optimum level.
“He can see but his sight is compromised. He probably has double or treble vision. He can see us when we come in but if you show him a small photograph it’s probably a bit hazy to him.
“His hearing seems fine. People go in and tell him stories and he’s laughing and smiling but he can’t communicate with us. That’s probably one of the worst things about all this.”
Information on the attack is that a 21-year-old called Filippo Lombardi faces a charge of grievous bodily harm, which he has denied. However, he has admitted a guilty plea on a lesser violent disorder charge, so he will be brought to trial in England this week. Sean’s wife Martina will attend.
Earlier on this year, 29-year-old Daniele Sciusco was jailed for two-and-a-half years for also admitting a charge of violent disorder.
