Marc Guehi almost joined Liverpool in the summer but Crystal Palace pulled the plug after failing to sign a replacement for their club captain.

Much like Cody Gakpo is struggling without the competition that for game time that Luis Diaz provided last season, Ibrahima Konate is battling without the competition that Guehi would have provided.

Konate has been at fault in some way or another goals conceded in several of Liverpool’s most recent games, and it’s now seriously costing the Reds.

Joe Gomez is an option, but Arne Slot seemingly won’t use him at centre-back unless there is no other option.

Marc Guehi clears up confusion over failed move to Liverpool in the summer

After seeing his move to Anfield collapse, Guehi has seen some things written and said in the media that he has taken the opportunity to correct.

Namely, he was not as bitterly disappointed in the failed transfer as many have speculated.

“Everyone has this perception like it was difficult, it actually wasn’t difficult at all [to come back to Palace and just play football],” he said on Sky Sports.

“When you’re focused on what’s the most important thing, it becomes easy. I know that god has a plan for me, and whatever their plan will be, will come to fruition at some point.

“The goal and the focus has always been to play football and do that the best I can.”

Liverpool cannot afford to not sign Marc Guehi in January

Given how the season is going and how unreliable Konate has been in recent months, Liverpool would be making an almighty mistake not signing a new centre-back in the winter window.

After selling Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool tried to sign Guehi, but it didn’t pan out. The lack of depth in central defence has really hurt the Reds.

Konate’s form is not improving – if anything, it’s getting worse. With this in mind, Guehi remains as the perfect replacement.

While he lacks the same physical presence as Konate, he is a lot better than the Frenchman in possession, which has been the Liverpool star’s main problem this season.
