Joe Gomez did not receive a major farewell at Anfield on Sunday, but he may be one of the players who leave Liverpool this summer, according to new claims.

Liverpool signed Gomez from Charlton Athletic in 2014 when he was just 18, but 12 years later, and his Anfield career may be set to end with a whimper.

The Englishman has had a tragic history with injuries, playing just 274 games in over a decade. In total, Gomez has suffered 16 different injuries, missing a total of 212 games across 1,077 days through injury and rehabilitation.

By all rights, Gomez should have surpassed 500 games for Liverpool, but sadly, his body never allowed it.

Joe Gomez tipped for summer transfer exit

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness reports that Liverpool could let Gomez leave the club this summer in what should be a ‘busy’ transfer window for the Reds.

Speaking on Football Insiders Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “He’s been a good servant, but I do think it’s time for Gomez to go.

“This is again going to be another busy window. It looks like Liverpool, after injuries and certain things as well, have got to get this one right. The defence is crucial again for them as it was previously when they didn’t get Marc Guehi.

“So, yes, I think Gomez will go. I think it is time to go. And there needs to be a freshness coming into Liverpool and certainly at the back. I know there’s been a few targets they’ve looked at, but I think Gomez is one that will go.”

Liverpool’s defence is a work in progress, but much change is expected this summer

Virgil van Dijk is one of the few players remaining from the ‘old guard’ if Gomez leaves this summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold is gone. Joel Matip is gone. Ibrahima Konate could still leave. Alisson Becker is also heavily linked with a move to Juventus.

However, there is a potentially very bright future at Anfield.

Giovanni Leoni, who was really unfortunate to tear his ACL at the start of this season, will be back before long. Liverpool have also committed £60m to signing Rennes prodigy Jeremy Jacquet. Both teenagers rank highest in most metrics for U-21 centre-backs and could form a wonderful partnership in the years to come.

Liverpool are also linked with a free transfer to sign Bournemouth free agent Marcos Senesi, although time will tell if that’s merely paper talk.
