Liverpool are set to make an immediate decision on the future of Ibrahima Konate, after over a year of speculation.

The French centre-back has been at the heart of a long contract renewal saga that is now set to come to an end. Konate’s Liverpool contract expires on 30 June, and there is no longer any time for a back-and-forth between his agents and the club.

This season has been a challenging one for Konate. His form has been erratic, while the dubious tactical instructions from much-maligned manager Arne Slot have not helped.

In addition to losing cherished teammate and friend Diogo Jota in the summer before the season began, Konate also suffered the tragic loss of his father in January 2026.

Regardless of what happens next, this will no doubt go down as the most challenging year of 27-year-old Konate’s life. If he does leave, it will be sad to see him go, but he will have the love and loyalty of Liverpool fans forever.

Latest news on Ibrahima Konate saga with contract renewal update ‘imminent.

Last month, Konate was quoted by journalists as saying he and Liverpool “were close to an agreement” and “for sure there is a big chance I’m here next season,” although news on this front has gone surprisingly quiet ever since.

Now, journalist Ben Jacobs has taken to X to share news on Konate’s future, saying that “clarity over his future is expected imminently.”

It has been a confusing saga to follow as each week has seemingly brought contradicting updates. If Konate does leave the club this summer, it will beg the question: What has happened since Konate told the press he would likely be staying at the club?

Konate and how his future affects the club’s summer plans

Since joining Liverpool in 2021, Konate has won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, making his time at Anfield a success even if this season was a collective failure.

If Konate stays, Liverpool will still need another centre-back in addition to the imminent arrival of £60m signing Jeremy Jacquet. Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi has been linked with a free transfer to Anfield, which would be a smart way to save resources for other problematic areas of the squad, including the right wing.

If Konate leaves, Liverpool will need to make two more centre-back signings which, without a transfer fee for the Frenchman, will complicate matters much like it did last summer when Trent Alexander-Arnold joined Real Madrid for a nominal £10m fee.
