Liverpool will open fresh contract talks with Colombian winger Luis Diaz at the end of the season with the 28-year-old after a productive and triumphant domestic campaign.
It comes as no surprise that Mohamed Salah leads Liverpool’s goalscoring charts given he has led Europe in that regard all season but Diaz has been very good despite some unfair criticism.
I will be the first to say that the former Porto star was unfairly cricicised for his form earlier this season and calls for him to be sold are short-sighted and an indication that Diaz is actually quite underrated.
While not a prolific player, Diaz has 16 goals and eight assists in all competitions this season but he hasn’t been able to play in his preferred left-wing role due to Cody Gakpo’s excellence in that position.
As a result, Diaz has played 13 games at centre-forward which is a role he is actually very good at. He sometimes drifts out of the game when he’s unable to find space but unlike some centre-forwards, his movement is so good he is able to occupy two centre halves at once.
Liverpool are not turning a blind eye to his form with reliable sources now reporting he is set for renewed contract talks with the club after the season ends.
Liverpool set to re-open contract talks with Luis Diaz in the summer
Sky Sports now report that Liverpool could be set for contract talks with Diaz and his representatives to discuss extending his terms beyond 2027.
They report: “Let’s just bring you some breaking news from Liverpool…the man who started the comeback [against Spurs] last Sunday was Luis Diaz, and Liverpool will hold talks about extending his contract at the club at the end of this season.
“We have seen this season dominated by conversations about contracts at Liverpool, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah all in the final year of their deals.
“The captain and Salah have both signed new deals and now it looks as though Liverpool will be looking to extend Luis Diaz’s stay at the club, having arrived in January 2022 from Porto and having enjoyed an excellent season at Anfield.”
