Liverpool will reportedly honour the two years remaining on Diogo Jota’s contract in a bid to support his mourning family in this tragic time.
I can scarcely believe I am typing these words. Like many supporters across the globe, disbelief remains as it feels impossible to imagine the larger than life character that Diogo possessed is now gone.
The tragic road accident that took place on Thursday has left his wife, Rute Cardoso, who he married just two weeks ago, and three children without their primary caretaker.
Supporters online have expressed how proud they are to learn that Liverpool will not abandon the contract Jota signed in 2022.
There have also been calls from supporters to retire the No.20 journey in honour of Jota. It would be an incredible gesture and perhaps the best way to immortalise him.
Liverpool to pay proceeds of Diogo ‘s contract to his family
According to a report from Record, from Jota’s native Portugal, Liverpool have no plans to abandon the agreement Diogo Jota signed in 2022 to renew his contract with the club.
He reportedly earned £142,000 per week during his time at Liverpool and the remaining two years of his deal means the Reds will pay his family a total of £14.5m.
One way or another, it’s clear that Jota’s beautiful family will not go without support. Many Liverpool players have emphasised this in their tributes to their teammate but no one put it better than his best friend Ruben Neves.
In his public tribute on Instagram, Neves wrote: “I will make sure your loved ones never lack anything while you’re there, far away thinking of us, waiting for us.”
It’s the right thing to do
Legally, Liverpool are not obliged to do this but ethically, it’s the only appropriate thing to do but all the same I am proud of the club for this move.
In a tragic way, Jota has achieved what many dream of doing for their families before they retire in old age: he has set his family and kids up for life.
It does not, however, replace the love and emotional support that a husband and father provides.. That said, it has been healing somewhat to see the outpouring of love and solidarity for the Jota and Silva family.
RIP Diogo and Andre. You will never be forgotten but forever sorely missed.
