Liverpool should spend whatever fee Bayer Leverkusen are asking for on signing a few different players, Ally McCoist has warned.

The Reds jogged to the Premier League title and with their rivals sure to heavily invest this summer to bridge the gap to Liverpool, Arne Slot is getting ready for his first serious investment into his squad.

The side he inherited from Jurgen Klopp was good enough to win the league this season despite conceding 40 goals in the process.

Slot is sure to reinforce his defence but Mohamed Salah also needs more help in attacking situations and so Florian Wirtz has been identified to join the Reds in the No.10 role – an area Liverpool aren’t blessed with world class talent.

Wirtz has 16 goals and 15 assists this season but as good as he is, McCoist says Liverpool shoul ignore him and sign three players for the same price.

Liverpool should not spend £126million to sign Florian Wirtz – it’s too much money, says Ally McCoist

Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly holding out for £126million depending on which outlet you believe but Liverpool have been told to ignore the German international.

When asked by Jeff Stelling if the fee is too high for Wirtz, McCoist told talkSPORT: “Yes, for anybody (it is) – that’s my argument.

“Is he a good player? Yeah. Is he a top player? Yeah, but straight away if you can get three players at £40m or maybe an £80m and a £40m — yes is the answer to the question.

“I think that money could be better spent, I really do.

“Yes I like him as a player and he’ll make a difference in any side but it’s too much for me, it really is too much. I know the market has gone crazy but I still think the priority (should be a striker).”

Liverpool’s squad is so well-balanced that it actually is crying out for another difference-maker

With the Liverpool squad so well balanced at the moment, Liverpool could actually really use another bonafide world class operator.

Not only could Salah do with having someone else capable of running the attack, he would also benefit hugely from somone with as much vision as Wirtz does joining the club.
