Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot “doesn’t trust” some members of his squad, ahead of what could be a busy summer at Anfield.
The Reds are on the verge of winning their second Premier League title, with just a draw needed at home to Tottenham on Sunday.
Once this season is over, noticeable reinforcements are needed at Liverpool, despite their title triumph, in order to give Slot the players he wants.
Speaking on Stick to Football [via The Mirror], Carragher claimed the Reds’ head coach has a lack of trust in his fringe players, hence the need for reinforcements:
“If you look at Liverpool this season – this is not the manager’s squad, it is Jurgen Klopp’s,” Carragher said.
“Arne Slot doesn’t trust the squad. When people talk about Liverpool at the end of the season, their style during the winter is not the same and is not consistent like the rest of the season. Slot plays the same players every week. We don’t know if that’s his way of play, but we will probably find out next season.
“If Ibrahima Konate or Virgil van Dijk got injured, who would come in at the back really? They have Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez, who is injury prone. Liverpool need another centre-back to really push Konate. The same also applies in central midfield with Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.”
Carragher spot on about Liverpool squad
Carragher makes some very valid points, with Slot’s lack of rotation this season arguably due to him not having faith in certain squad players being good enough to fill in.
That has led to some key men being overplayed and dipping in form of late, including Ryan Gravenberch and Mohamed Salah, highlighting the need for more elite-level competition next season.
It remains to be seen what the future holds for certain players, but the likes of Caoimhin Kelleher, Harvey Elliott and Darwin Nunez may be considering their futures, with the latter likely to be sold by Liverpool anyway.
This promises to be such an exciting summer transfer window for the Reds – if they can win the title with a squad that Slot isn’t entirely happy with, next season could be even more successful.
