Reliable journalist David Ornstein has provided a new update on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future, giving supporters a glimmer of hope.

The Reds’ vice-captain is now a two-time Premier League champion, following Sunday’s memorable 5-1 win at home to Tottenham.

Alexander-Arnold’s Liverpool future has been a major talking point throughout this season, with the 26-year-old wanted by Real Madrid and looking increasingly likely to seal a move there, having not yet signed a new deal.

Speaking on The Athletic FC Podcast [via Rousing The Kop], Ornstein admitted that a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu remains likely, but did at least say it wasn’t definite:

“It’s long since been the case that we’re expecting him to join Real Madrid, but of course, until absolutely everything is finalised, that door is just slightly ajar.”

Why would Trent want to leave now?

Alexander-Arnold is risking damaging his legacy at Liverpool this summer if he does join Madrid, especially as he would be departing on a free transfer, robbing his boyhood club of the chance to receive huge money for him.

While the lure of the reigning Champions League holders is great, given their status as arguably the world’s most prestigious football club, there must surely be a part of him wondering if moving on is the right decision.

The scenes at Anfield last Sunday were unforgettable, and Alexander-Arnold would be waving goodbye to the club he has supported his whole life, not to mention leaving at the peak of his powers when he could be a future captain after Virgil van Dijk.

Ultimately, if the right-back’s head has been turned, there is nothing Liverpool can do about it, but it would be a big disappointment to see him head elsewhere this summer.

Arne Slot is building something special, and you would think Alexander-Arnold would want to be a major part of it, and supporters will rightly judge him for thinking differently.

That said, he has won all there is to win at Liverpool, so there is some sense in him liking the idea of Madrid, but it is easy to see things backfiring in Spain, with Alexander-Arnold eventually regretting his decision.
