Liverpool are “very interested” in signing Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton, according to an exciting new transfer claim from journalist Pete O’Rourke.
The Reds have been linked with the 22-year-old plenty of times over the past year or so, with the Eagles ace tipped to enjoy a big career at a huge club.
Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke again talked up Liverpool’s interest in Wharton ahead of the summer, but other top clubs are also in the mix and Champions League qualification could be vital:
“There’s no doubt he’s going be on the radar of a number of clubs. He has been on the radar of several top Premier League clubs for a while now, with United amongst them. You’ve got the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and others abroad who are very much interested in Wharton.
“We know he is going to be the subject of transfer speculation this summer because of how well he is playing for Crystal Palace. He is a key man for them. Wharton, at some point, will want to be playing at the highest level possible. I think he’s admitted before that he sees himself playing Champions League football and wants to become a regular in the England squad as well.
“He’s obviously one of the players who is on United’s list as they look to restructure their midfield next season as well. There are a number of players that they are looking at, and Wharton is on that list.”
Can Adam Wharton be Liverpool’s midfield solution?
Liverpool’s midfield continues to be a huge issue, with Alexis Mac Allister a far cry from the influential figure he was in his first two seasons at Anfield.
Some youth is needed in the middle of the park, and arguably a signing who allows Ryan Gravenberch a little more attacking freedom, and Wharton could be ideal in that respect, being called a “joy to play with” by Eberechi Eze.
The England international is an expert at sitting in front of the defence and dictating games, also excelling out of possession, averaging 2.2 tackles per game in the Premier League this season.
Wharton is still young, so expecting him to come straight in as a key man at Liverpool would be unfair, but he still has the maturity and technical ability to make an impact from the off, making a noticeable difference in the middle of the park.
