Liverpool are believed to be “very keen” on completing the signing of Tottenham centre-back Micky van de Ven this summer, according to a new transfer report.

Defensive reinforcements are a must for the Reds at the end of the season, in order to add depth in that area for Arne Slot.

While Virgil van Dijk remains as good as ever, Liverpool have to be looking at long-term replacements who can take over the mantle when he drifts past his peak.

Ibrahima Konate is a superb centre-back, but there are always concerns about his fitness, and the same applies to Joe Gomez, who is sidelined again currently with a hamstring issue.

Football Insider, the Reds are “very keen” on signing Van de Ven, who has become such an impressive performer for Spurs, when fit.

The Dutchman is said to be “highly-rated” by Slot, as well as being considered an “elite Champions League level” player by the club.

Brilliant summer option for Liverpool

Van de Ven could be a fantastic addition for Liverpool in the summer transfer window, even though Spurs clearly won’t make it easy to get him.

The 23-year-old is a lightning-fast centre-back who can also shine at left-back, which would be ideal for the Reds, and Gary Neville heaped praise on him after a memorable assist away to Manchester United earlier this season, saying:

“Absolutely brilliant from van de Ven. One of the best runs I’ve ever seen from a centre-back. He drives through four Manchester United players. It’s amazing. Brilliant.”

At 23, Van de Ven still has so much of his career ahead of him, and given the fact that he now has experience of the Premier League, he stands out as a leading choice to be Van Dijk’s long-term heir.

He is contracted with Spurs until the summer of 2029, however, so Liverpool would likely have to stump up a huge fee to get their man. He would be worth it, though, potentially leading the back-line for many years to come at Anfield.
