Napoli striker Victor Osimhen would be an “unbelievable” signing by Liverpool this summer, according to new comments from former Scotland striker Ally McCoist.
The Reds need to sign a new centre forward before next season gets underway, with neither Diogo Jota nor Darwin Nunez the long-term solution in that position.
Osimhen has been mentioned as a summer option for Liverpool, with talks reportedly held over a potential summer move, and his future appears to lie away from Napoli.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday [via Football Insider], McCoist talked up the idea of the Premier League champions signing the Nigeria international in the summer window:
“I think Osimhen would be absolutely perfect at somewhere like Liverpool. I think he’d be unbelievable at Liverpool.”
The perfect No.9 for Liverpool?
Osimhen ticks plenty of boxes for Liverpool in terms of his all-round profile, with the 26-year-old in his peak years, and likely to remain that way for at least another two or three years.
The Nigerian has a sensational record for Napoli, scoring 76 goals in only 133 appearances, helping inspire them to the Serie A title back in 2022/23.
Osimhen possesses pace, power and deadly finishing, which would all be such a weapon for Liverpool, and coach Yilmaz Vural has lauded him, saying:
“I have been in the football world for so many years. I have never seen such a player. He is literally 50% of the team. From the ground, from the air, go forward, come back. He makes counterattacks alone. If that is not enough, he helps the defence. He even makes assists in places where he will hit. In addition to his contribution in terms of play, he also raises his teammates spiritually. He is a 4/4 player.”
Osimhen would cost a huge sum of money and demand big wages, but given his quality, he could be the perfect man to come in alongside No.10 Florian Wirtz and lead the line in front of the German.
In truth, though, it is hard to see Liverpool affording both him and the Bayer Leverkusen superstar, so a younger and cheaper option may need to be looked at.
