Liverpool are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen fullback Jeremie Frimpong, who has a gentleman’s agreement to leave the Bundesliga side for £33.1million in the summer transfer window.

As we head for March, the protracted contract negotiations for Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold grow increasingly stressful for supporters.

Fans have no idea whether or not the club’s three best players will stay or leave when the season ends. This leads to moments like the one that had fans scratching their heads during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.

Alexander-Arnold’s form has been quite erratic of late and so it was encouraging to see the 26-year-old playing well against Villa. He grabbed a goal to get Liverpool back into the game in the second half but was then substituted shortly after.

Slot clarified after the game that he “would have loved” to keep Trent on the pitch but couldn’t as he wanted to manage his minutes. So although the reason for the fullback being taken off was benign, fans worry there are deeper implications.

But until Liverpool are certain Alexander-Arnold will stay, they need to look at potential replacements with it now being reported that Liverpool are looking at signing Bayer Leverkusen star Jeremie Frimpong.

Gentleman’s agreement set to ignite transfer battle for Jeremie Frimpong between Liverpool and Manchester City

According to a report from teamTALK, Liverpool and Manchester City are both interested in prolific fullback Jeremie Frimpong with the player said to have a “gentleman’s agreement” that enables him to leave for a discount fee.

FourFourTwo ranks Frimpong as the second best right back in the world behind Alexander-Arnold so Liverpool would be getting the next best thing if the Scouser were to leave the club for Real Madrid in the summer.

Frimpong has reportedly been very keen to make the move to the Premier League over the last two years. Liverpool are said to be “firmly in the race for Frimpong” even though Frimpong started his youth career with Man City.

The gentleman’s agreement referenced would allow Frimpong to leave for €40million (£33.1m) even though his release clause expired at the start of the season which would make him an absolute bargain.
