Liverpool are seemingly ready to keep Arne Slot for another season despite the difficulties the team has endured, leaving the door open for Manchester United to steal in for Xabi Alonso.
While it’s not likely that Alonso would ever manage United, stranger things have happened.
Alan Pardew has told talkSPORT that United should hire Alonso in the summer ‘if he isn’t going to Liverpool.’
He explained: “If you are going to look at a financial situation, Alonso isn’t going to cost you a transfer fee.
“Taking all of his staff would all be involved with a new contract, with a new club. There’s a real window of opportunity.
“I think they’re going to have to make a big call in the summer. Slot has had a strange season.
“He could still end up in the Champions League. So is that enough with the injuries and the problems that he’s had?
“So that’s an interesting one, but if he isn’t going to Liverpool, I think Man United should be interested.”
Liverpool are taking a major risk not taking action over Slot’s regression at Anfield
The latest news on Slot’s future at Liverpool is bad news for fans who believe he should be replaced at the helm when the season ends.
Widespread reports from the likes of David Ornstein, Fabrizio Romano and David Lynch all suggest that although FSG are unhappy with the state of affairs at Anfield, they will not fire him when the season concludes.

Liverpool are hardly nailed on for Champions League football next season with the Reds set to play Manchester United next, then Chelsea and then Aston Villa.
With three of Liverpool’s remaining four Premier League games this season set to come against fellow European football hopefuls, there are no guarantees of a top five league finish this season.
It’s an appalling fall from grace for Liverpool after they secured the Premier League title with five games to go last season.
Most concerning about the current campaign is how almost every Liverpool player has regressed. Mohamed Salah seems a shadow of the player that broke multiple attacking records last season, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have both played below their usual standards this season etc.
Liverpool are taking a major gamble if they stick with Slot. If they twist and hire the likes of Alonso, it will provide a lot more hope ahead of the 2026-27 season.
