Liverpool are believed to be “closing in” on securing a new contract for a “dominant” player, according to a fresh claim from journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds may have retained the services of Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, but there are other players whose current deals are expiring soon.

Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate are both out of contract next summer, for example, while there are doubts over Luis Diaz being offered an extension as well.

Now, Romano has taken to X to report that Liverpool youngster Wellity Lucky has agreed a new four-year deal at Anfield, keeping the 19-year-old defender at Anfield in the process:

“Understand Liverpool are now closing in on new 4 year deal set to be agreed with 19 year old talented centre back Wellity Lucky. Despite several proposals, #LFC are very confident to get it sealed shortly.”

Great news for a talented young player

This is brilliant news for Lucky, who has been rewarded for some impressive performances for Liverpool at youth team level, with scout Antonio Mango impressed with him last year, saying:

“Impressed me with his performance. Extremely commanding and & dominating in the heart of defence. Showing intelligence in his position which enabled him to read through opposition attacks. Strong, aggressive but composed in his interventions. Also extremely calm and self-assured in position, progressive and vertical in his passing. Brilliant performance from the youngster.”

Lucky has yet to make an appearance for Liverpool’s first team, but the fact that they are tying him down for another four years suggests that he could be seen as a future member of Arne Slot’s squad.

He has already made 39 appearances for the Reds’ Under-21s and Under-18s combined, and he will hope to make the step up next season, potentially earning some minutes in domestic cup competitions.

It’s now a case of Liverpool making some big decisions with more senior players, not least Robertson, whose contract runs out in 2026 and who hasn’t quite looked the player of old in the past 12 months.

The 31-year-old can continue to be a good squad player next term – Milos Kerkez will hopefully arrive from Bournemouth as his starting replacement before then – but handing him a new deal would have its risks, given his age.
