Liverpool will reportedly not “do anything crazy” to keep Ibrahima Konate as contract talks have apparently stalled with the Merseyside giants.

Jurgen Klopp is one of the greatest managers to ever grace Anfield or the Premier League and he gave Liverpool many gifts. One was restoring the club to its rightful place at the top of English football but another was diminishing the attachment fans have to individual players.

In the years under Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers, there was so little success to enjoy that it was natural for fans to become more attached to select players like Philippe Coutinho but when the little Brazilian chose to leave for Barcelona, Klopp let him. He fought for him to stay but when his mind was made up, Klopp accepted the decision with grace.

Liverpool then went on to use the money earned from Coutinho’s sale to buy Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker among others and it proved to fans that the sum is always greater than its constituent parts.

On Monday, I wrote about how Konate has now hinted he will not leave Liverpool amid strong interest from Real Madrid and PSG.

The defender appeared to flirt with the two clubs when he admitted the interest was flattering and whether or not there is genuine transfer courtship going on, Liverpool will not fight to keep the defender if he does want to leave.

A report from Sky Sports Switzerland claims that Konate is open to returning to France to join PSG. The defender is reportedly “warming” to the idea of returning to his home city and with a Liverpool contract extension “dragging”, contact has been initiated between PSG and Konate’s representatives.

Konate’s contract is currently set to expire at the end of the 2025/26 season as Liverpool’s contract situation gets worse and worse.

Losing Konate would be disastrous – especially if Virgil van Dijk leaves for free in the summer – and fans can only hope there is a method to the madness that seems to simmer just below the world class football on display this season.

Liverpool are dominating under Arne Slot but off the pitch, the wheels are threatening to come off and unless things improve soon, there could be a drastically different Liverpool on show next season.
