Liverpool are still in the market for a centre-back for a centre-back with Marc Guehi high on their list of targets but they risk angering Newcastle United further if they proceed.

By now, it’s common knowledge that Liverpool are working hard to sign 25-year-old Alexander Isak for a fee in the region of £120m which has shaken the Newcastle United setup.

This, after stealing their top summer target, Hugo Ekitike, and with a move to sign Guehi, they risk further upsetting the Toon apple cart.

According to Times journalist Matt Hardy, Newcastle are set to “revive” their interest in Guehi as they “look to turn around what has so far been a disastrous transfer window.”

The problem is that they don’t want to spend more than £40m to sign the England international and Palace want at least £50m.

Liverpool are in a similar position on the centre-back’s valuation which may be why they haven’t snapped him up yet.

It’s clear that the Reds have no issues in negotiating and completing transfers but FSG will no doubt be keeping a very close eye on this summer’s lavish spending.

Fabrizio Romano: There is still a chance that Guehi leaves Palace and Liverpool will soon decide their next move

Liverpool are somewhat preoccupied with their marquee move for Isak but if that progresses as it now seems likely, there should still be time to sign Guehi although Palace will want it done soon.

The Premier League season is soon upon us and Palace will need to source a replacement for a player that was so influential in winning the club’s first ever trophy with their FA Cup triumph last season.

Writing in his Give Me Sport newsletter, Romano reports: “Yes, still a possibility to see him leaving Palace this season. Liverpool will decide on defender soon.”

Liverpool are now operating in unknown territory; they’ve never acted this aggressively in the transfer market.

And yet, there are still some questions over squad depth with a new centre-back and potentially even another winger needed to round out the squad’s numbers.

One way or another, these are exciting times for Liverpool supporters and indicative of the club’s desire to usher in a new period of dominance for a club truly back at the height of their historic powers.
