Former Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva has raved about Alexis Mac Allister after he helped the Reds lift the Premier League last season.

When the Reds signed Mac Allister for £35m, it was clear they were signing one of the best midfielders in England.

Yet, even though he had already won the World Cup, the truly level of the Argentine was unknown. Even now, it’s not clear just how good Mac Allister could be.

Something tells me that the arrival of Florian Wirtz will unlock even more of the talent that Mac Allister has. The pair should be untouchable in possession next season.

Now, Lucas has raved about Mac Allister.

Lucas Leiva says Alexis Mac Allister is a “fantastic player”

That might be putting it mildly too.

Speaking to Redmen TV, Lucas Leiva raved about Mac Allister and hinted that the former Brighton star is probably quite underrated.

“What a player, what a fantastic player. I think he’s capable of doing that link, you know, between defence and attack,” Lucas said.

“Very composed, you know, I agree, probably he doesn’t get the headlines, but I’m sure inside the team, he’s well respected and we can see, you know, it’s not only for Liverpool, before as well, for the national team, you know, he played, he plays a big part of the success of the Argentina.

“Unfortunately, you know, I have to say that, but, but yeah, fantastic player. I think he helps as well, the players around him to, to play better.

“So yeah, I agree , he played a big role last year, two seasons ago as well. He was a fantastic signing and we just hope that he continues like that.”

The season ahead should be really interesting from a Liverpool perspective and while a lot has been made about the talent Arne Slot should have at his disposal in attack, the midfield is what intrigues me.

It will be curious to see how the Dutch coach sets his team up with Mac Allister key to success. That said, with Florian Wirtz now part of the squad, how will he fit Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai into the side?

It’s a blessing to have so many talented players in the squad but how Slot will keep everyone happy I’m unsure.
