Liverpool forward Luis Diaz could look to seal a move away from the club this summer if Barcelona come calling, according to a new update.
The Colombian joined the Reds back in January 2022, making an immediate impression and adding life to a squad that appeared to be tiring.
Diaz’s instant impact allowed Jurgen Klopp’s side to mount a genuine quadruple assault, with the two domestic cup trophies eventually coming their way.
Since then, the 27-year-old has arguably been more hit-and-miss in a Liverpool shirt, however, with last season affected badly by a knee injury, and his end product sometimes criticised this time around.
“Diaz is likely to push for Liverpool to sanction his departure if a move to Barcelona opens up in the summer, according to GMS sources, despite him publicly insisting that he is happy in his current surroundings and preparing for another campaign of Premier League action in the post-Klopp era.
“It is understood that the Merseyside giants are not particularly open to selling the winger, who was signed in a deal worth up to £49million from Porto in January 2022, and their stance will not be impacted by whether the talismanic Mohamed Salah stays in his current surroundings or embarks on a fresh challenge.”
Our thoughts on Diaz potentially leaving Liverpool…
Diaz is unquestionably a good footballer with many strong attributes, from excellent dribbling to an admirable work ethic, but he does feel like an expendable figure at Liverpool.
While it is harsh to compare the Colombia international to Sadio Mane, given the latter’s legendary status at Anfield, he has never come close to hitting those world-class heights.
As mentioned, his end product has flattered to deceive, with a tally of 24 goals in 97 appearances far from earth-shattering, and at 27, now may be the best time for Liverpool to cash in on him.
This isn’t to say that Diaz isn’t an asset, and that him staying put would be a bad thing, but if Barca appear with a huge offer this summer, Liverpool should take it, looking to sign a younger replacement with a higher ceiling instead.
