Netherlands international Lutsharel Geertruida is “being tracked” by Liverpool ahead of a potential summer move, according to journalist Sebastien Vidal.

Geetruida has spent this season on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, but a recent claim from reporter Philipp Hinze suggested that he won’t stay on at the Stadium of Light:

“Decision made – Geertruida will not stay at Sunderland! There is now internal clarity. Lutsharel Geertruida, who is on loan at Sunderland from Leipzig, will not remain at Sunderland beyond the summer. The Dutch international set to leave, and Sunderland will not trigger the €23m buying option.

“Geertruida will initially return to Leipzig. However, chances are big that the 25-year-old will not continue with the Bundesliga club either. A permanent solution is being sought.”

Now, Vidal has taken to X to say that Liverpool are among the clubs in the mix to sign Geertruida ahead of next season, with other Premier League clubs rivalling them for his signature:

“Lutsharel Geertruida, currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, is expected to leave the Black Cats this summer. Leeds United is pushing to sign the Dutch defender, who is also being tracked by Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Tottenham.”

Could Lutsharel Geertruida boost Liverpool’s right-back options?

Geertruida may not be the world’s most spectacular right-back, but he is a safe pair of hands who could be a solid addition for Liverpool, having won the Eredivisie title with Feyenoord back in 2022/23.

The 25-year-old has been a reliable figure for an impressive Sunderland side this term, making 27 Premier League appearances, and averaging 1.7 clearances and 1.3 tackles per game in the competition.

Geertruida’s versatility could also be handy for Liverpool, with the Dutchman playing at centre-back and in central midfield this season, but most importantly, he would add much-needed depth at right-back.

It has been a problem position for the Reds all season, due to Conor Bradley’s injury and Jeremie Frimpong’s struggles, and the Leipzig man has the defensive solidity to sure things up there.

That said, Liverpool should look at alternative options to Geertruida – Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries could be a more attack-minded choice, for example – as they look to put an awful campaign behind them.
