A European club are said to have contacted Liverpool over the availability of a “brilliant” player this summer, according to the reliable Paul Joyce.

The Reds are still working on incoming signings ahead of the end of the summer transfer window, but current players will also depart in that time.

While much focus is on the likes of Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa and Darwin Nunez, the future of Tyler Morton also needs to be sorted.

According to a new report from The Times‘ Joyce, Lyon have made contact with Liverpool over the signing of the English midfielder this summer, with his Reds future up in the air.

It seems clear that Arne Slot doesn’t see him as an important part of his plans, so it will be interesting to see how the Premier League champions react to this interest from the Ligue 1 side.

Time for Morton to leave Liverpool?

Morton is a talented young footballer with poise and quality in the middle of the park, with Jurgen Klopp an admirer when they worked together earlier in his career:

“You can see Tyler Morton. We have to send him to the gym as if he gets a body, he’s a brilliant footballer. There are some things to come physique wise, but the football brain is outstanding.”

Now 22 years of age, though, this feels like the right time for Morton to test himself permanently, instead of again being loaned out to a Championship club, or elsewhere.

He has already had temporary spells with Blackburn Rovers and Hull City, impressing on both occasions, but he is now at a point in his career where he needs to be a settled key starter somewhere.

Liverpool’s midfield depth is superb currently, with Florian Wirtz joining Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo and Elliott in the squad, and Morton will find it almost impossible to feature regularly.

His current Reds deal expires next summer, so now is the last time for them to receive a fee for his services, rather than losing him on a free transfer at the end of next season.
