Liverpool are still battling off the advances of Real Madrid as they seek to hold onto Trent Alexander-Arnold and have received a blow as Joshua Kimmich is close to signing a new Bayern Munich contract.
An interesting angle this season is that FSG must be secretly delighted Liverpool are dominating on the pitch as they continue to negotiate contracts for Mohamed Salah, the best winger, Virgil van Dijk, the best centre-back and, Trent Alexander-Arnold right-back in the world.
It’s the only thing suppressing the fear of losing the talented trio in one fell swoop. Liverpool beat Man City on Sunday without much fuss but if things weren’t going so swimmingly for Arne Slot and his players, there might be more public panic.
It’s the perfect distraction but the Reds may have more reason to worry now as Joshua Kimmich, Real Madrid’s other top target at right-back, is set to recommit himself to Bayern Munich in the long-term.
With the modern obsession with inverted fullbacks, Kimmich and Alexander-Arnold are two prime targets. Both are able to patrol the right flank while providing world class support on the ball and so Liverpool will be disheartened to learn Kimmich is closing in on a new contract at the Allianz Arena.]
The German international is currently earning €375,000 (£311,000) per week before bonuses and at 29, has been tempted to leave the Bundesliga.
Fabrizio Romano, however, now reports that Bayern are “advancing” to the “final stages” of discussions over a new deal for Kimmich.
Romano reports: “As reported last week, proposal improved and the club waiting for final green light.”
Then, Romano added that there are no discussions with Real Madrid over a free agent move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer with Madrid still focused on Trent.
“No Real Madrid talks… as option number 1, 2 and 3 on Real list remains Trent Alexander-Arnold since March 2024.”
Liverpool have yet to be reported as being any closer to extending Trent’s contract than they were at the start of the season. Losing him for free would be a serious blow even if he isn’t performing to the heights we all know he can.
The Reds would have a tough job of replacing him although recent reports suggest Jeremie Frimpong is an exciting option if the Scouser does make the move to Spain when the season ends.
