Liverpool are reportedly leading the race to sign RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons in the summer with Manchester United set to miss out to their rivals.
The 2024/25 season is essentially a free hit for new boss Arne Slot. Nobody expected the Dutch coach to find immediate success even despite the quality of the players left to him by Jurgen Klopp.
Yet, Slot has Liverpool at the top of the Premier League, into the Carabao Cup final and facing a tough test in the Champions League where they face PSG across a two-legged Round of 16 clash.
Despite the thrills this season has provided, Liverpool are expected to be busy in the summer window as Slot gets to work bringing to life his vision for this side.
To date, Slot has only signed Federico Chiesa, who joined in the summer, while Giorgi Mamardashvili was signed and loaned back to Valencia but will be joining at the end of the season.
One player that keeps being linked with Liverpool is RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons, who has seven goals and four assists from an attacking midfield position. He has also played a handful (9) of games at left-wing, according to Transfermarkt.
Liverpool set to beat Manchester United to Xavi Simons
Liverpool are leading Manchester United and Manchester City in the race to sign Xavi Simons, according to a report from the Daily Star, via Paisley Gates. The report says: “Man Utd look set t olose out to Liverpool after making enquiries for RB Leipzig’s Dutch sensation Xavi Simons.”
Reportedly, Liverpool see Xavi as a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who has yet to put pen to paper on a new contract. That said, even if Salah stays, Arne Slot rates the player really highly and would still like to sign him.
Talks between Liverpool and Leipzig would be interesting given that Jurgen Klopp is now head of global soccer at the Red Bull group.
Leipzig do not want to part ways with the baller but could be tempted into a sale if they were made an offer of around £80million.
Signing Simons would be a brilliant move. His ability to provide world class service to attackers would likely excite Salah, in particular, who can turn a half-chance into a certain goal.
