Liverpool have now been boosted by the news that Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi will leave the club at the end of the season.
Guehi cruelly failed to join the Reds on deadline day in the summer transfer window, with the Eagles not allowing him to leave because of a lack of depth.
The England international even passed a medical and agreed a £35m move to Anfield, but instead, he has had to stay put for the time being.
Speaking to reporters [via This Is Anfield], Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that Guehi will depart Selhurst Park when the 2025/26 season reaches its conclusion:
“I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year. The club wanted [him to stay]. They offered Marc a new contract. But he said, ‘No, I want to make something different’. And that’s normal. And for us, it’s how we can deal with this situation? [What] is the best way to get this next step done? And that’s all about how we are talking together.”
Liverpool still favourites to sign Guehi next year?
This is undoubtedly a big boost for Liverpool, even though Guehi hasn’t specified that he wants to join the Reds over other clubs, including Real Madrid.
The hope is that the 25-year-old still sees the Premier League champions as his preferred choice, having been so agonisingly close to moving to Anfield, and he would be a perfect addition for Arne Slot, having been lauded by Lee Carsley in the past after thriving together on England duty.
“I made Marc captain when I was in the under-21s. He’s a player who has shown leadership qualities throughout his career so far. His maturity [is clear] not only on the pitch but off the pitch.”
Guehi is heading into the 2026 World Cup as a highly likely starter for England, and on his current trajectory, he could mature into one of the best centre-backs in Europe.
Missing out on him in 2026 would be tough to take for Liverpool, but there is no reason for them not to be confident of getting their man.
