Michael Owen has raised concerns over Liverpool’s decision-making heading into the summer transfer window, suggesting the club may already be making an error before any business has even officially begun.
Liverpool are preparing for a busy period under Arne Slot, with changes expected across several areas of the squad.
However, Owen believes one of the club’s current decisions could already come back to haunt them, particularly given the importance of stability during a transitional phase.
Owen questions Liverpool’s plan in key position
The former Liverpool striker’s concern centres around the club’s handling of experienced players and whether they are moving on too quickly without being fully confident in the alternatives.
Owen feels that Liverpool risk weakening themselves if they allow established figures to leave without having clear, proven replacements ready to step straight in.
Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “I love Andy Robertson. I think they pensioned him off too early. But to be playing him now in a lot of the big games, they played him at Old Trafford, they played him against Everton, it’s not a great look for Kerkez, is it?”
He has previously been vocal about the importance of balancing evolution with continuity, especially when a squad is entering a new cycle under a different manager.
Warning over replacing experience too quickly
A key part of Owen’s argument is that Liverpool could be underestimating the value of experience within the dressing room.
Players who have been through multiple title races and European campaigns provide more than just on-pitch ability, offering leadership and stability during high-pressure moments.
Owen’s concern is that once those players are gone, it is not always possible to replicate that influence simply through new signings, even if they are highly talented.
Transition under Arne Slot adds pressure
Liverpool’s situation is further complicated by the ongoing transition under Arne Slot, who is still shaping the squad in his own image after taking over from Jurgen Klopp.
With that change already underway, every major transfer decision carries added weight, particularly if it involves long-standing members of the team.
Owen’s warning suggests that Liverpool must be careful not to accelerate the rebuild to the point where it disrupts the balance of the squad.
