Iconic former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has made his title prediction for this season, sharing what he thinks are the Reds’ greatest strengths in the wake of the Merseyside derby.

While the aftermath of the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park has surrounded the poor quality of the refereeing display and the scenes after full-time, it’s important to remember that Liverpool actually extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday.

It might not feel like it because Liverpool dropped two points at the death and because it’s only one point, but the draw was a good result on paper. Arsenal will not be happy about it so that’s a good measure of things.

Rafa Benitez has since provided his perspective on the title race and has backed his former club to go all the way.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Benitez said: “When you fight for titles normally we say the last 10 games are the key games, that’s when you win trophies..

“In this case, I think if they continue they have balance, they have a team that is capable to score goals but also is good at defending. When you have balance you win titles. With good players you win titles.

“Liverpool are in the driving seat, they have an advantage.

“They have the right mentality, the coach is doing well, he understands what he needs to do. He’s changing the way they play depending on what is good against the opponent, so they have a great advantage. My feeling. like the majority of professionals, is that they will win.”

Liverpool showed title credentials at Goodison Park

The way that Michal Oliver handled the game has been the main talking point since the official called for full-time before chaos descended upon Goodison Park.

Liverpool, however, should be proud of how they played. Despite the game being broken up constantly by Everton players buying cheap fouls, the away side came back from 1-0 down to find themselves in a 2-1 winning position.

When the equaliser hit the back of the net in the 98th minute, it was deflating. On another day, however, Liverpool see the game out and win the match.

Fortunately, Everton are unlikely to have a decisive say in where the Premier League title goes.
