Reliable journalist Sami Mokbel has now provided a new update regarding Liverpool’s pursuit of a “fantastic” player in the summer transfer window.

The Alexander Isak saga is dominating the headlines currently, as the Reds look to strike a deal for the Newcastle United talisman.

Away from the Swede, though, Liverpool will be hoping to conduct more business between now and the end of the window, both in terms of incoming and outgoing signings.

Jarell Quansah’s move to Bayer Leverkusen has increased the need for the Premier League champions to bring in a new centre-back, with Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi mentioned as a leading option.

Now, BBC Sport‘s Mokbel has reported that Liverpool still have a “genuine interest” in the £50,000-a-week Englishman, but the Merseysiders “want to pay less” than the £40m that Palace are demanding for his signature.

Guehi the standout centre-back option for Liverpool

Guehi ticks so many boxes for Liverpool, with the 24-year-old at a good age to be a long-term signing, as well as already being an experienced head who captains a Premier League team.

Palace manager Oliver Glasner knows what a top-quality player the England international has been for him, saying of the defender last season:

“He always told me he’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace, and that’s always for me the most important thing, that the players tell me that they like to play with us, that they like to play for Crystal Palace, that they like to play for the team here, and this Marc told me very often. But sometimes people tell and act the opposite way, but Marc told me and he acted in the same way, so he really showed his fantastic character again.”

The lure of Liverpool will hopefully be too great for Guehi to turn down, and frankly, if Palace continue to ask for £40m, it could still be a good piece of business, given his status as a key man for England.

Should the Reds snap him up on the cheap, though, it would be yet more inspired work by sporting director Richard Hughes, during what has been a superb summer in the transfer market at Anfield.
