Andy Robertson has been linked with a move from Liverpool to Tottenham this month, and now a significant update has dropped regarding the next chapter in his career.
The 31-year-old’s future has been a major talking point of late, with the Reds and Spurs reportedly in talks over a move to north London in the January transfer window.
Liverpool’s woeful 3-2 defeat away to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday looked to potentially even be Robertson’s final game for the club, which would be a sad way for his Anfield career to come to an end.
But now, The Athletic‘s reliable David Ornstein reports on X that the move is off for the time being, with the Scot set to stay put with the Reds for the remainder of the season:
“Andy Robertson from Liverpool to Spurs not proceeding at present. THFC agreed in principle for move to happen after UCL group stage but required Tsimikas recall by LFC; not possible so far. Roma seeking replacement but time running out.”
The far better outcome for Liverpool
This is great news for Liverpool, considering the idea of losing Robertson this month didn’t go down well with plenty of supporters. He isn’t definitely staying, but it looks that way.
Selling him would have made little sense at a time when the reigning Premier League champions are already short of squad depth, even if it meant Kostas Tsimikas returning from his loan spell at Roma.
Meanwhile, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has made it clear what he wants to happen regarding his long-time teammate, saying:
“Of course I speak to him. I speak to him every day, he’s my vice-captain. Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay but whatever happens, let’s see. Do I expect him to be here on Wednesday [for the Qarabag game]? That’s not on me, is it? Let’s speak about [my best memories of him] when [a move] happens.”
Once the season ends and Robertson’s contract expires, it feels like there will be a natural parting of ways, allowing him to receive a special send-off at Anfield later in the campaign.
